Rangana Herath Biography
Rangana Herath is one of the most promising spinners in Sri Lankan cricket. However being part of an era where Muralitharan has reigned supreme, the opportunities have been few and far between and now with the emergence of young talented spinners he hasn’t been able to make his mark on the game.
Born in 1978, Herath played for Kurunegala Youth Cricket Club and for Moors Sports Club at the age of 20. Herath was picked in the home series against Australia in 1999 after a good showing on Sri Lanka A’s tour to England. He debuted in the 2nd test against Australia and combining with Murali ripped through Australia’s batting lineup taking 4 wickets in the 1st innings. Thereafter till 2004, he played only two tests. During this period, he played a number of games for Sri Lanka A and was also a part of Sri Lanka’s squad ‘Down Under’ but didn’t get to play. However he made his Test comeback against Australia at Colombo and between 2004-05 picked up 29 wickets in 10 Tests at an impressive average of 31.42. However the selectors didn’t deem it good enough and he was thrown into the wilderness till 2008. Since then he has made a comeback and had a fantastic 2009 season taking 23 wickets. He has also played in a handful of ODI’s.
A slow left armer, Herath is not a big turner of the ball and relies on flight and change in pace to outfox the batsman. He is a very accurate bowler and looks to attack at most times. In the twilight of his career, Herath with his wealth of experience can be a good mentor to some of the younger spinners in the Sri Lankan squad.
