Tharanga Paranavitana Biography
Following the retirements of Sanath Jayasuriya and Marvan Atapattu, Sri Lanka have struggled to find an able partner for Dilshan at the top of the order in the Test arena but after countless experimentations with the likes of Tharanga, Vandort and Mubarak selectors finally seem to have zeroed in on the left handed Paranavitana to solve their opening woes.
The Kegalle born who is a veteran at the domestic level made his Test debut against Pakistan in 2009 before a horrific terrorist bus attack on the team bus while heading for the third day’s play of the 2nd test left him badly injured. But just four months later, the left hander was once again playing on home soil against the same opposition and showed no signs of the scars as he stroked 72 and 49 in the two innings. He also managed to score two half centuries against India in Mumbai but the alarming regularity with which he was throwing away starts, slowly was becoming a cause of concern in the Sri Lankan camp.
However those doubts were erased in the Galle Test against India in 2010 where he scored his maiden ton but the effort was sadly shadowed by Murali’s farewell from the game. But not to be undone, the southpaw came up with another ton in the consequent Test showing his determination to making the position his own.
A player who prefers to work hard for his runs and is more than happy to be in the background, Paranavitana currently seems to have the selectors and captain’s faith in his talents. However his test has just begun and over the years, Paranavitana’s stock will be decided by how he performs around the world in varying and alien conditions.
